Girl Scouts of Sierra Cascade
Girl
Scouts of Sierra Cascade was chartered in 1958 when the Shasta Area Girl Scout
Council and the Superior Area Girl Scout council merged. Cookies sold for 50
cents a box. Since then the organization has grown from serving 590 girls and
287 adults to serving 5000 girls and 1800 adults. On October 1, 2007, Girl
Scouts of Sierra Cascade merged with four other Girl Scout Councils to become
Girl Scouts of Northern California.

History
On March 12, 1912,
Juliette Gordon Low held the first Girl Scout meeting. In 1913, she helped write
the first Girl Scout handbook. Along with information on first aid, camping and
housekeeping, it also had instructions for how to stop a runaway horse and how
to tie up a burglar with eight inches if cord.
In 1927 Juliette Gordon Low
died at 66 years of age, leaving behind a legacy of serving girls so that they
might develop to their full potential. Today there are more than two million
girl members and more than 10 million Girl Scouts worldwide. Every year, on
October 31st, Girl Scouts celebrate Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday as a
remembrance of her wonderful gift for girls.
